The 2009 Oklahoma Nationals Pearl of the Plains Karate Tournament attracted strong competition and featured martial artists from Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, even from as far away as Iowa! Many of the divisions ran deep with experienced competitors focused on doing their best and leaving everything out in the ring.
Grandmaster Gilkey extends his special thanks to everyone who attended whether competitor or spectator, and who continued the tradition of the 2009 Oklahoma Nationals being one of the largest tournaments in Oklahoma! There are too many to individually thank, but Grandmaster Gilkey would like to recognize and offer his special appreciation for some of the visiting groups represented by:
Grandmaster Richard Osborn, Sr - Ozzie's Crew traveled from Springfield, MO and brought intensely strong competition to numerous divisions across the tournament. The top notch competition of Ozzie's Crew is only a representation of the strength of martial artists within the Midwest Martial Arts Association's Southern Conference. Many of the MMASC tournament season champions present were winning their divisions in the Oklahoma Nationals! The MMASC can be found at www.mmasc.net
Mr. Jim Riggs, 5th DAN - Mr. Riggs and SWAT (the Southwest Association of Tournaments) represents competitors from across Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Mr. Riggs is well known in Oklahoma, and SWAT can be found at www.swatkarate.com
Sensei Jack Groves - Groves' Karate Studio from Eureka Springs not only brought competition, but was a key vendor serving our martial arts' competitors and spectators at the tournament. Representing the American Karate Association Southern Region, many of their competitors and national champions were present and competing in the Oklahoma Nationals! The AKA South can be found at www.akasouthernregion.com
The 2009 Oklahoma Nationals was sanctioned by the Oklahoma Karate Association. Competitors who are interested in joining the Oklahoma Karate association, or who placed and are interested in those points being used in competing for an Oklahoma State championship can contact and join the OKA via their website at: www.oklahomakarate.org.
Grandmaster Gilkey also would like to recognize the Wild Bunch Karate Association for its presence at the 2009 Oklahoma Nationals. Many Wild Bunch Black Belts were in attendance, and a number of the Oklahoma competitors and OKA members are also members of the Wild Bunch. Mr. Bill Briscoe, 9th DAN, and Mr. Bob Kinney, 9th DAN, founders of the Wild Bunch were present at the 2009 Oklahoma Nationals along with Mr. Ted Soliday, 9th DAN, of the Wild Bunch and also head of the United Goju Karate Association (www.ugka.org). Grandmaster Gilkey invited them, and the largest recent gathering of Japanese Goju Ryu Black Belts, to honor Mr. Howard Fields. Grandmaster Gilkey officially recognized Mr. Fields as 10th Degree, in conjunction with the attending Goju Grandmasters and Masters at the tournament. Mr. Howard Fields' accomplishments and contributions to Japanese Goju Ryu Karate and the Tulsa area are long standing and the 2009 Oklahoma Nationals provided a great venue for this event.
